If You Read Anymore Of That Book, I Swear...

It's only the 2nd day of school and Teagan is ripping apart my nicely planned out year like a madwoman! Her Language Arts is pretty much laid out for me. There is spelling, vocab, chapter books, phonics, and creative exploration (or something like that). It's Sonlight and I HIGHLY recommend. Sometimes it calls for her to read one chapter a day, sometimes more. Books are planned out in order of difficulty. I have every day planned out to the last day of school as to what she is to read. She read the first chapter yesterday, and was supposed to read the second chapter today.

But, every time I turned around today she was reading out of that book!! I'm like, "Teagan, what are you doing? You're only supposed to read the second chapter today!"

Well, come 9:30 p.m. she's done with it. A whole week of reading lesson plan done in two days. She grinned from ear to ear and asked, "What book do I start tomorrow?"

Well, Teagan, I don't know. Why don't you just go ahead and read all 15 books. LOL!

This is where I'm supposed let her work ahead as she takes an interest in reading (a nice perk of homeschooling)....But my well planned and organized year is at stake! The organization I have longed for is slipping away!

I'm kidding, sort of. I'll let her read ahead as long and as far as she wants to. It's not like lesson plans are etched in stone. And, the first couple of books are really easy to read, fun books to get students interested.

Note to self: Do not print lesson plans out for the entire year until the year is over.

Your book problems are only beginning. Once homeschooled kids get going, they have been known to devour not just entire libraries....but in my case...entire county's libraries! Sadly, there's not a lot on Gutenberg or Kindle for very young kids. BTW, it's apparent that you are a little bit funny. And that's hard to find and nice to see on the homeschool blogosphere.

Hi Homeschool Dad! I replied this morning, but it must have malfunctioned!

I thank you for the compliment! I, too, have not seen much humor in homeschool. But, I tell ya, if it weren't for these funny girls (and Granny's cackling) I wouldn't have anything funny to say! =)

I have read so many blogs about how homeschooled children have a passion for reading. I am still waiting on that to come full force! I have a sneaking suspicion that my 8 year old reads at night because she hates bedtime. But, hey, I'll take it! And if she's reading, by all means, stay up late.

Thank you for finding my blog! I am definitely still learning during my second year and if it hadn't been for other homeschool bloggers, I'm not sure I'd have any clue as to what to do. If you have a blog, I'd love to check it out. Just drop me a link!

THE key to bibliophilia is ZERO television. Not an hour a day. Not one movie on Saturdays but absolutely no time, zippo. You see kids' minds crave drama and their imagination needs an outlet. This is what TV usurps. One mom shared your frustration about her kids....but then they went on a sailboat for a month that had nothing but books. By the time the kids got off the boat, they couldn't put the books down! I basically forced my daughter to read - something that all these pinheads insist not to do. Well now she's the biggest reader in our family. I literally have to confiscate the Kindle from her during the day. She's 8 also. My 9 year old son has read almost every book (appropriate for him) in existence.

I am a married, South Carolina homeschooling mama to 3 of my 4 girls. I'll be honest; they drive me NUTS sometimes. But, I am here to tell you that I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world! I'm not your typical homeschool mom. I am not an over-achieving Martha Stewart. I am just a plain, everyday, laid back, patient person. I occasionally slip up a cuss word when I step on Legos, and I mean every word of it. I partake in adult beverages whenever my BFF, a former homeschooler with her MSN who landed an awesome job as a college nursing instructor, can get away so we can reminisce about the good old days.  Where most moms can relate, I love my children. Homeschooling has been a blessing for my family, and I am so thankful that I have been able to continue into a second year.
