It's not really back to school for us without our homeschool tradition and the 2nd Annual Back to School Brownie Sundae Breakfast! Yes, it's bad for you. Yes, I should've (and could've) picked a better tradition, but when it's one day a year...what does it hurt? The girls love it. As a matter of fact, I believe that's the only thing that got them out of bed this morning.

I had originally planned to homeschool on a more year-round basis, but quickly changed my mind at the thought of having to go to bed early during the summer months. My children are also night owls, so we had a lot of fun just enjoying our time off. New things implemented this year are a full year of completed lesson plans--yay me, and class schedules with time frames. What a difference those two simple organization techniques make! We got started 20 minutes behind schedule, but we stayed consistent in that 20 minute delay. I am surprised at how smooth our day ran!

We began our day with circle time in the living room. That is where our calendar and weather station is, and also where we say our Pledge of Allegiance and do rhyme time every morning. Rhyme time is where we learn a new nursery rhyme and discuss the vocabulary used as well as word families specific to the rhyme. Today was Jack and Jill. Later this week, we will act out Jack and Jill. I'm super excited to tell them!

Libby worked on the letter 'A' today and we had a great time doing our ah-ah-alligator motion. Libby and I cut out her letter and pinned a leaf to her alphabet tree. It's a lonely little leaf, but she's proud of it.

She also traced the letter 'A' with her finger and pencil before using manipulatives to create the letter. She did GREAT!

Teagan jumped right into her math. We are still waiting on her math curriculum since she needed something a little more advanced. To improvise, I used some of last year's addition with regrouping sheets and let her use the Math-U-See blocks to help. Tomorrow we will do some subtraction with regrouping. Depending on her ease of completion, we will soon begin multiplication.

She began reading her first chapter book in the Sonlight curriculum, did some copy work, built upon her knowledge of adjectives, and was an excellent helper at snack time and lunch. These girls love having kitchen jobs to do!

Neely did her first lesson in math, working on place value. We are going to skip around and omit some topics in the Alpha math book that she has already mastered. Place value is something she could use a little extra help on since we will begin to work with double digits this year.

Both girls worked on science and social studies together. We found a good center that we could all benefit from and working as a team on those subjects. Poor girls wanted to do their science first because they want to know what's in my experiment supply boxes. Ha-ha! Patience my dears, we experiment every Thursday.

Neely worked hard on her 2nd grade reading books today! I gave her a chapter to read and she was done in under 10 minutes. That prompted her to read a couple more books from the shelf. Which reminded her of the book logs we keep during the school year. Which refreshed her memory of me once saying, "Every 50 books you read, you get a Barbie." Funny. Kids remember the darnedest things. I had to log in 4 books for her today! I wish they would remember to clean their room and rinse the sink out when they finish brushing their teeth! ;-)

I am a married, South Carolina homeschooling mama to 3 of my 4 girls. I'll be honest; they drive me NUTS sometimes. But, I am here to tell you that I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world! I'm not your typical homeschool mom. I am not an over-achieving Martha Stewart. I am just a plain, everyday, laid back, patient person. I occasionally slip up a cuss word when I step on Legos, and I mean every word of it. I partake in adult beverages whenever my BFF, a former homeschooler with her MSN who landed an awesome job as a college nursing instructor, can get away so we can reminisce about the good old days.  Where most moms can relate, I love my children. Homeschooling has been a blessing for my family, and I am so thankful that I have been able to continue into a second year.
